How Shirley’s Yarns & Gifts became a reality

What started as a way to supply one lady with quality yarn has turned into a well-loved establishment.  We are  thrilled that everyone who shops with us receives a product worthy of all of your one of a kind creations.

                           ~ Shirley Jones, Founder

The story of Shirley’s Yarns & Gifts began in 1972 when Shirley Jones, an avid knitter, was lamenting the fact that she couldn’t find quality yarn in the area.

She knew if she was struggling, many others were too.  She decided to open her own yarn shop.
Her husband, Dick Jones, was busy with his own business selling mobile homes.  He offered to give her a little space in his office building, to open what he thought would be a small business.

Boy was he wrong!

As her business grew, and grew,  AND GREW, he added more and more space.
Shirley’s (as the locals call it) is now a substantial year-round business that carries so much more than yarn.  On any given day, you can find cake decorations, games, puzzles, toys, baby shower gifts, fudge, jams & jellies, books by local Maine authors for adults and children, as well as art supplies, needlepoint, cross-stitch and latch hook rugs.  Oh, and let’s not forget, loads of cubbies and racks filled to the brim with yummy, squishable, high quality yarn.

Kiana Moran, Shirley and Dick’s daughter, married her high school sweetheart, Chuck, and moved away from home to raise racehorses for breeders on the West Coast.  A few years after their daughter Melody was born, they decided they wanted to raise her in Maine and moved back home.

Kiana started working at the yarn shop and found it a natural fit.  She loves to talk to people, as well as help people.  She pitched in with bookkeeping and anything else that was needed.
In 2016, she took over the day to day operation of the store.

Alicia Thomas, honorary granddaughter of Shirley and Dick, joined the team in 2014.  She brought with her an insight and vision for the future of the yarn shop.  She introduced a monthly newsletter, classes, and a yarn loyalty program.

Alicia is always learning and  implementing new and exciting things to take Shirley’s to the next level.
Alicia and her husband, Blake, have two daughters, Liana and Delainey.
